Pigeons - Social flying acrobats with a strong sense of direction
Species-appropriate husbandry – How to make them feel comfortable
Together on the move
Pigeons should be kept at least in pairs or in groups. Keeping them alone is not species-appropriate and can lead to behavioral disorders.
Pigeon loft with structure
The pigeon loft should not exceed a stocking density of 4 adult pigeons or yearlings per 1 m² or 2 m³. For young pigeons, the stocking density should be reduced by half. The room height should not exceed 2.25 m, the humidity should be a maximum of 60% and dust development should be avoided. If free flight is not possible, the animals should have spacious aviaries at their disposal.
Floor grid and bathing opportunity
A floor grid with 2–10 cm distance to the floor facilitates cleaning. A pigeon bath with up to 8 cm water depth should be offered regularly.
Perches and nesting cells
Sufficient perches, especially in young animal lofts in excess (approx. > 10 %), as well as nesting cells with nesting pads are required.

Cleanliness & Hygiene
🧼 Weekly change
💦 Fresh bath water
A clean environment is essential for the health of pigeons:
Fresh every day
The droppings should be removed daily with a rake. The food and water containers must also be cleaned daily to prevent diseases.
Thoroughly once a week
The ground should be completely replaced at least weekly. With a high stocking density, more frequent cleaning is recommended.
Bathing keeps you healthy
A clean bathtub promotes the plumage care of pigeons. Regular bathing opportunities are important for the hygiene and well-being of pigeons.

Nutrition
🧂 Grit & minerals
💧 Water at all times
Pigeons need a balanced diet consisting of a high-quality grain feed for pigeons, supplemented by grit and mineral stones to support digestion. Fresh water must always be available.
Grains as a basis
The basis is high-quality grain mixtures for pigeons. They provide energy and ensure a balanced diet.
Minerals supplement
Grit and mineral stones support digestion. They are an integral part of the feeding and should therefore always be available.
Always fresh water
Clean drinking water must be available at all times. It is essential for health, metabolism and vitality.

Activity
👥 Swarm life
🌿 New incentives
These curious birds need a variety of employment opportunities:
Pigeons are very active and curious – they love to fly, bathe and explore their surroundings. Climbing branches, swings, changing perches and natural materials stimulate movement. Particularly exciting: hidden feeding places and new branches in the flight area.
Active design
Perches, nesting cells and climbing elements promote movement. They structure the room and encourage exploration.
Strong together
Pigeons are flock birds. Living in pairs or groups strengthens their social behavior and increases their well-being.
Impulses in everyday life
Hidden feeding places stimulate curiosity. New branches too. And variety in the aviary. This prevents boredom.
