Goats - Climbing artists with clear rules

Goats are curious, social animals with a great urge to move around – and a strong sense of order. There is a clear hierarchy in the herd, usually led by an experienced nanny goat. Whether in the meadow, in the stable or high up on a rock: goats want to see what’s going on – and then enjoy their rest on a raised platform.

Species-appropriate husbandry – How to make them feel comfortable

Community with foresight
Goats do not like to live alone. A stable group – such as several nanny goats with a castrated buck – ensures balance and structure.

Space for climbing and romping
A bright, well-ventilated stable with high areas offers protection and shelter. There should be 2–3 m² of stable space and 5–8 m² of outdoor space per animal. The pasture area should be at least 1,500 m² for 3–5 animals, with fence heights of 0.80 m to 1.20 m depending on the size of the animal.

Ascent desired
Goats love to climb! Rocks, tree trunks or raised platforms in the enclosure provide activity and promote sure-footedness.

Protection in wind and weather
A covered area outdoors protects against rain and sun – important for the well-being of the animals.

Cleanliness & Hygiene

🧽 Daily care
🧼 Weekly change
💦 Fresh water

Freshness every day
Fecal and urine areas must be removed daily. This keeps the environment hygienic and the animals stay healthy.

Renew litter
The litter should be completely replaced at least once a week. If heavily soiled, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.

Clean water points
Goats must have access to fresh drinking water at all times. Only well-maintained drinkers guarantee the health of the animals.

Nutrition

🌾 Hay & roughage
🌿 Herbs & twigs
💧 Water at all times

Goats are gourmets with a penchant for fresh food. High-quality hay or other structure-rich roughage forms the basis. Twigs, herbs or foliage are also readily eaten. Fresh drinking water must be available at all times.

Roughage as a basis
The basis is high-quality hay or other structure-rich roughage. It keeps the digestive tract moving.

Fresh complements
Twigs, herbs and foliage provide variety. They are not only tasty, but also species-appropriate.

Water is a must
It is very important that clean drinking water is always available. This is especially true in hot temperatures or when the goats move a lot.

👥 Social life
🌿 New stimuli

Goats are active, clever and playful. Climbing opportunities, changing runs, natural obstacles and small search games keep them mentally and physically fit – boredom is not an option for goats.

Active environment
Rocks, tree trunks and raised platforms promote movement and sure-footedness in goats. Goats need a lot of variety.

Life in community
Goats are herd animals. Clear structures within the group give them security and promote their social behavior.

Impulses in everyday life
New runs, obstacles or small search games stimulate the animals and keep them mentally and physically fit.
