Donkeys - Thoughtful companions with strong social behavior
Species-appropriate husbandry – How to make them feel comfortable
Never alone!
Donkeys require companionship – at least in pairs. Whether as a mixed-sex duo or in groups of geldings or mares, it is crucial that the animals harmonize well. Stallions should only be kept together if they know each other and no mares are present.
Structured Space
For two medium-sized donkeys, a minimum of 10 m² of stable area and 150 m² of paved, well-drained outdoor run are required. As a rule of thumb: stable area = number of animals × (2 × wither height)². The stable should be at least 2 m high and well-ventilated. Walking and feeding areas require non-slip flooring.
Retreat & Variety
Trees, stone walls, fences, or other retreat areas provide donkeys with structure and security. A sturdy enclosure and secured gates are mandatory – donkeys are true escape artists!
Care & Comfort
Rolling areas with sand, scrubbing brushes or posts, and some wood for gnawing contribute to well-being – gnawing branches are also beneficial for digestion.

Cleanliness & Hygiene
🧼 Weekly change
💦 Fresh water
Freshness Every Day
Feces and urine areas must be cleaned daily. This ensures the stable and run remain clean and the animals healthy.
Clean Thoroughly
Bedding and floor material should be completely replaced once a week. Depending on usage or weather conditions, more frequent replacement may be necessary.
Keep Waterers Clean
Fresh water must be available to the animals at all times. Only clean waterers ensure the health and well-being of the animals.
